The canister of ThickenUp® Clear is smaller compared to other starch-based thickeners. Will it run out sooner? How frequently will I have to order?
A 4.4 oz (125 g) canister = approximately 89 scoops = 89 x 4 fl oz nectar or mildly thick (level 2) thickened servings = 44 x 4 fl oz honey thickened servings or moderately thick (level 3).
Is there a scoop included in the canister, and what size is it?
Yes, there is a scoop included in 4.4 oz (125 g) canister of ThickenUp® Clear. One full scoop measures 0.05 oz or 1.4 g, corresponding to approximately 1 teaspoon or mildly thick (level 2). This is the amount of thickener required to thicken one serving of most beverages to a nectar consistency. Add 3 to 4 scoops for Pudding or Extremely Thick (level 4).
How long can I use ThickenUp® Clear powder once the canister has been opened?
After the canister is opened, ThickenUp® Clear can be used for up to 8 weeks.
How many servings are available from a canister?
The number of servings available in each packaging option will depend upon the desired consistency level of the thickened beverages. For 4 fl oz beverages, the 1-2-3 rule applies. 1 scoop for Nectar or Mildly Thick (level 2), 2 scoops for Honey or Moderately Thick (level 3), 3 scoops for Pudding. The following is an example of how many servings are available in each format:
- 4.4 oz (125 g) canister = approximately 89 scoops = approximately 89 nectar or mildly thick (level 2) thickened servings = approximately 44 honey or moderately thick (level 3) thickened servings.
Do I use the same amount of Thicken Up® Clear powder to thicken liquids as I would my current starch-based thickener?
Compared to most current starch-based thickeners, a smaller amount of Thicken Up® Clear powder is required to thicken the same amount of fluid to the same consistency. Please refer to the preparation charts.
While preparing a thickened beverage with ThickenUp® Clear, does it make a difference to the end product if the thickener or the fluid is added first to the glass?
Yes, for best results it is recommended that the liquid be added to the powder. In other words, place the powder in the glass or container first, then add the liquid.
Sometimes when I thicken water with ThickenUp® Clear it appears somewhat cloudy. Why does this happen and are there any tips to improve the clarity of the water?
ThickenUp® Clear will occasionally trap air bubbles within the water and hold them dispersed throughout the thickened liquid. This can produce a cloudy appearance. Water with less “air” tends to produce a more clear appearance. The following are suggestions to help improve the clarity of water thickened with ThickenUp® Clear:
- Bottled water: shake the bottle well, open and let stand to allow the “air” to escape then thicken as per guidelines
- Tap water: For best results, collect tap water and let it stand for a period of time before thickening. Boiled water that has cooled and is then thickened provides the best clarity
If you are making thickened water in advance, you may use tap water – experience has shown that while it may be cloudy initially, after overnight refrigeration, the thickened water becomes significantly clearer.
Why does milk require a longer thickening time?
Fluids with a higher protein content typically take longer to thicken. It is suggested that milk stand for at least 15 minutes to achieve the desired consistency.
Does reheating of fluids thickened with ThickenUp® Clear change the consistency of the product?
Heating beverages prepared with ThickenUp® Clear may cause them to appear thinner but the overall consistency should remain within the desired consistency range. Beverages thickened with ThickenUp® Clear should be reheated only until desired temperature is achieved; do not exceed 180°F and DO NOT BOIL. Thorough stirring is recommended to achieve the best consistency and to prevent hot-spots. Hot beverages should always be checked prior to consuming to minimize the risk of burns.
Can I thicken coffee with milk? How do I do that?
Yes, you can thicken coffee with milk added to it. For the best results, make sure the milk is added to the coffee prior to thickening.
Can pureed food prepared with ThickenUp® Clear be frozen, thawed, re-heated and served?
